Drupal Global Training Day – May, 2014

Global Training Days is a quarterly event to introduce new users to Drupal. From the Global Training Days page on drupal.org, “Drupal Global Training Days is an initiative by the Drupal Association to introduce new and beginning users to Drupal. The Drupal Association is partnering with training companies to make this happen. Once a quarter, free or low cost training events will take place around the world.” Axelerant participates with the Drupal Association for these events and this quarter, introductory trainings were organized at Srinagar and Bangalore.

The training at Bangalore was organized by the Axelerant Team at Bangalore – Malabya, Mantesh and Vishnu and Hussain (that’s me). It was done on a short notice, confirmed barely a week before the training day. The event was promoted on meetup.com and on Axelerant’s Facebook page and we worked to spread the word to all interested as much as possible.

We saw only two participants on the training day but we made the most of it. We were able to give focused attention and answer specific questions. I began with an overview of Drupal, what it is, what it can do and trying it out on simplytest. The participants then installed Drupal on their laptops and worked on building basic parts with blocks and views. Mantesh worked with the participants and gave hands-on guidance in building the site and answering specific questions on how to use blocks, menus, views, etc…

We covered the basics in a span of about three hours. The event was well received and we are hoping to reach out to more people by the next training day in the end of August.

It was really good overall. I knew most of the topics because I created a couple of websites, but It was like a brush up for me since it had been a while since I used Drupal. I am excited and want more of it. I will surely come for the coming meetups. I am looking for slightly advanced topics and also it would help me if the teaching was use case driven or if we tried to mock some existing sites. I am excited about drush which Hussain was speaking about and want to learn it, it would be nice if you taught that in the next meetup.

The training was great for all beginners and enthusiasts. These kind of workshops should be done more to build a stronger community of open source technologies.
